Regional ocean circulation modeling

Abstract: A brief overview of the data assimilative ocean modeling system used at MET Norway is given. This modeling system is built around the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS), which is a community ocean model suited to high resolution setups. The basic configuration, the numerical kernel and various modular components (e.g. turbulent mixing, 4D-Var data assimilation) are described, and outstanding challenges related to Arctic modeling are discussed.
