Research and innovation
With large marine areas and one of the world`s longest coast lines, Norway has a strong focus on marine environment and industries, even in the fragile ecosystems of ice-covered waters.
In Arctic waters, sea ice, icebergs and rough weather conditions are common while observations are scarce and forecasts uncertain. Satellite data is a growing global source of information for societal, business and environmental applications. CIRFA is using this resource to develop new knowledge and technology in satellite remote sensing, data analyses and modelling.
We develop new knowledge, methods, and technology in seven key topics for Arctic marine applications, which represent the internal work package structure of CIRFA:
Sea ice and icebergs
WP2: Identifying and mapping of sea ice, icebergs and snow for safer navigation.
