Vacant PhD positions in (1) Remote sensing of oil in Arctic sea ice and (2) RPAS remote sensing for Arctic applications
EXTENDED DEADLINE – 10 January 2017
CIRFA has currently two open PhD candidates at UiT – The Arctic University of Norway, with an extended application deadline on 10 January 2017. The candidates will focus on (1) Remote Sensing of Oil in Arctic Sea Ice and (2) RPAS remote sensing for Arctic applications. The appointment is for four years. PhD position in Remote Sensing of Oil in Arctic Sea Ice
The PhD project will be focused on Remote Sensing of Oil in Arctic Sea Ice. The aim of the project is to gain knowledge on how remote sensing can be used to detect and monitor mineral oil spilled in Arctic sea ice. The study will include collection and analysis of data acquired by remote sensing sensors in large-scale laboratory experiments, in which sea ice will be grown in a large in-door basin and various oil-in-ice scenarios will be configured. Data will be collected with various remote sensing sensors, including a ground-based tomographic radar, and some optical sensors. The successful candidate will be involved in performing the measurements, and subsequently in the analysis of the collected data.

PhD position in RPAS remote sensing for Arctic applications
The research of the PhD position will be focused on RPAS remote sensing for Arctic applications, such as monitoring of snow and sea ice conditions, and/or detecting and tracking icebergs. The successful candidate will be involved in designing, developing and testing a platform-tailored remote sensing radar system, and subsequently studying the sensor capabilities by analyzing collected data.
